Danzas y Andanzas: The Spanish Canario from Street to Court, from Europe to the Americas
In this workshop we consider Arbeau and González, alongside later Spanish sources, from Noveli to Cairón. We look at steps, such as Caroso’s Sequiti Battuti al Canario, at their possible timing and rhythm within various musical sources, and at the improvisational aspects of the canario described in these sources. We each approach the canario through different dance practices: Meira Goldberg is a flamenco performer, scholar, teacher, and choreographer, and Anna de la Paz specializes in escuela bolera—the Spanish bolero, or classical school. We aim to open a window onto our conversation in movement as an embodied process of reconstruction and reenactment.
